The Best Ice Maker for 2020

When choosing an ice maker, it’s important to pick one that actually has modern features, because a fair few of them out there don’t.

I’m talking about essentials like automatic shutoff, and a quiet compressor. The automatic shutoff means you can just “go get ice” when you need it, rather than having to go back and turn the machine off when it’s done. It’s all too easy to forget and end up with a ridiculous amount of half-melted ice sat in one of those older-design machines.

But then again if you’re anywhere near one of those old machines, they have loud compressors that are hard to ignore anyway. “Wrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.” That’s all you can hear for hours.

So, forget about those old things. Let’s take a look at the actually good ice makers out there. We’ll go through the best pick for each type, starting with the best overall one.

Best Overall Ice Maker: hOmelabs Portable Countertop Ice Maker

This thing has your ice cubes ready in 6-8 minutes, and it can churn out up to 1.5 lbs of ice cubes at a time. Automatic shutoff too? Check. Quiet compressor as well? Check.

But the reason why this one is the top pick is that it goes above and beyond those things.

To start with, it also has two options for ice sizes, which is really neat. They’re both bullet-shaped, as you can see in the photo on the right, and the reason they’re bullet-shaped is because it’s much quicker to make ice that way.

The bullet shape with a hollowed out center allows the machine to get more surface area in the ice molds, so the water cools down faster. The flipside of that, is that this style of ice also cools your drink down faster.

Then there’s the huge two year warranty on this ice machine that stands out above the competition’s one year warranties. That’s a testament to the manufacturer believing in the quality of their products.

Other than that, the hOmelabs countertop ice maker has a 2.2 liter reservoir, hence the large amount of ice cubes it can make at once, but there’s something else that’s good about it’s design.

You see, any water from melted ice runs back down into the reservoir below to be reused to make more ice.

It’s pretty darn efficient, and you don’t get pools of water in the ice compartment either. It pretty much stays dry with only drops of water here and there.

Finally, you can see that this machine isn’t that big at all, and you might be wondering whether that’s a bad thing or not. Well, interestingly, the smaller style of ice machines are faster, quieter, and far less prone to mechanical problems like freezing than the bigger ones.

Like I said before, it’s because the modern design makes ice machines like this one much more efficient than ones you might have seen around, and that efficiency means the machine doesn’t have to strain itself so much. Components don’t freeze, and you don’t get buildup on the inside.

What We Like:

  • So Straightforward to Use – It just works. You fill it, and it makes ice until the automatic shutoff kicks in. Any water from melted ice just goes back down into the 2.2 liter reservoir below to become more ice.
  • Two Year Warranty – And you get an extra 6 months on top of that if you register it. That’s a very long warranty compared to other ice makers out there.
  • Two Options for Ice Sizes – They’re both bullet shaped, and the small size is small enough to fit in water bottle openings. That’s instantly a huge advantage over ice makers that don’t have that option.

What We Don’t Like:

  • It Only Comes in Metallic Grey – As you can see in the photos above, it does blend in on your countertop because it’s smaller than you’d expect and the design is pretty modern. However, it’s a shame there’s no other color options.

Best Nugget Ice Maker: Opal Countertop Nugget Ice Maker

This one is so modern that it even has bluetooth, so you can connect it to the free FirstBuild app and set up an ice making schedule. That’s a true step above automatic shutoff functions.

There’s the same style of reservoir in this one as the top pick, where the water from melted ice is collected and turned into more ice, and it’s capable of churning out roughly the same amount of ice as the top pick, which is more than enough.

The only downside of this one is that it takes 20 minutes to create the first batch of ice, but at least it can hold a whole 3 lbs of ice in the ice bin at once. Once the bin’s full, the ice maker shuts itself off too.

If you like this type of ice, then this is the one to go for.

What We Like:

  • Far Better Quality Ice than Restaurants Give You – The ice this machine gives you is clean, soft, and crunchy. It’s honestly exactly the right consistency you’re looking for, if you’re a fan of this nugget style of ice.

What We Don’t Like:

  • Some People Have Recieved Defective Units – While the vast majority of people get ones which work just fine, some unlucky people get one which is dead on arrival. However, there’s a one year warranty, so they’re easily replaced. The machine is excellent quality in terms of performance, so it’s a shame that the manufacturer’s quality control process doesn’t seem to screen out defective units very well. Otherwise, they’d get an even higher rating on Amazon.
