The Best Outdoor Daybed for 2020

Outdoor daybeds are the easiest way to turn your patio into a resort.

The most modern design, that’s highly sought-after, is the round style outdoor daybed with a retractable canopy, so you can sit in the shade or bathe in the sun as you wish.

Almost all of them are made with a PE rattan exterior, because not only does it look nice, but it’s a pretty hardy material for handling bad weather. It’s breathable, easy to clean, and it definitely gives off that “resort” vibe you’re looking for.

We’ll start by going into our review for the best deal for an outdoor daybed that you can get, before looking into a few alternative options. Further on, we’ll review the high end Sunbrella fabric options, the best budget option, and finally, the best choice for a small, one-person outdoor daybed for those with limited space who want their own personal haven.

The Best Outdoor Daybeds Reviewed

Best Overall Outdoor Daybed: Great Deal Furniture Bellagio

Dimensions:89″ L x 89″ W x 27.25″ H
Couch:89″ L x 44.75″ W x 27.25″ H
Ottomans (each):63.5″ L x 32.75″ W x 11.75″ H
Round Ottoman:34.5″ L x 34.5″ W x 11.75″ H

Simply put, this outdoor daybed is just incredible for the price. You’d expect to see something like this go for 2 to 3 times the price. It’s a really nice set that’s only held back by a few flaws that are easy to forgive, which we’ll get into in a moment.

It’s made of powder coated steel and PE wicker, and the fabric is an outdoor weather resistant polyester material. It’s not Sunbrella’s patented outdoor fabric, which is by no means a must-have when it comes to outdoor furniture, but we must say the fabric on this daybed is a little on the thin side and it’s also not entirely waterproof.

You’d also have some difficulty getting strong stains out of the fabric, because you can’t really bleach polyester like you can with Sunbrella. Though having said that, Sunbrella is only stain-resistant, not stain-proof. Beer, red wine, sunscreen and coffee will all strain Sunbrella too, which is why it’s not a must-have.

To be honest, the thinness of the fabric isn’t something you notice at all when lying or sitting on this daybed. It just feels resort quality, and as for the “not entirely waterproof” thing, you can simply wick water off it with a towel, so it’s not like it stays wet if you get any residual water on it after coming out the pool.

As for assembly, you’ll be glad to know that there’s basically no assembly required for this daybed at all really. You’ll still have to move it to your patio, but no tools are needed to put it together. You just put the legs and canopy on, then slide the pieces into place and clip them together to keep them in place.

Oh yeah, that’s another thing that’s great about this one. The pieces won’t slide apart because of those clips underneath. The cushions however, do tend to slide somewhat, but that happens with all daybeds out the box. People usually get some cheap, large Velcro strips to solve that problem.

Pro tip for using Velcro properly: the soft side of the Velcro should go on the rattan, and the rough side should go on the cushions. It’s much more effective that way. “Soft stays and rough roams” is the rule.
Pro tip #2: there’s no need to Velcro the round ottoman, because it’s surrounded by all the other cushions which hold it in place. This way, you can take off the ottoman’s cushion to get a much more stable (and stain-proof) surface for drinks, snacks, laptops and so on, without seeing strips of Velcro haphazardly stuck to it.

Once you’ve done this, you really have an incredible resort daybed for the price. Even the highest-end ones still need to use the Velcro trick to stop slippage, so spending more money won’t make a difference to that problem.

The only reason to spend more than this would be to get a Sunbrella fabric alternative, which I review further on, or, if you prefer the style, a daybed with a rectangular shape and more traditional-style bed canopy, which I review just after it.

What We Like:

  • Resort Quality for a Low Price – It’s quite impressive being able to get an outdoor daybed like this without it costing 2 to 3 times the price. Other resellers even sell this exact one for up to 50% more than this.
  • Robust Suspension Shocks – The suspension shocks on most daybeds that don’t cost a fortune tend to be pretty basic, but this one appears to be a cut above the rest in its price range.
  • Sturdy, Stylish Rattan – Thick enough to be resistant to wear and tear, this PE rattan will look as good as new after a good wipe down. We also think it looks pretty natural in the way rattan is woven, and the subtle variation in brown color makes it look premium. Also, it doesn’t have that plastic shine that you get with some PE rattan furniture where you take one look at them and think “plastic.”
  • Weather Resistant Fabric – Though it’s not Sunbrella, it’s still outdoors worthy polyester fabric, and you can even take off the covers and machine wash them.

What We Don’t Like:

  • Thin Cushion Fabric – Though you don’t notice it when lying or sitting on it, the fabric is a little thinner than you’d expect.

We’ve found it’s only something you’d really notice when you first get it, and then completely forget about afterwards. The only real downsides to the thinner fabric are the slightly increased amount of wrinkling over time, and a decreased resistance to cuts and tears.

The fabric isn’t nearly thin enough to end up being torn from normal use, or even from diving on it, so that’s not really an issue.

So that means the only drawback with this thinner fabric on this daybed’s cushions would be that they’ll develop small stretch wrinkles over a shorter time than if the fabric was thicker. That’s because it’s easier to stretch a thin fabric than a thick fabric, so with normal use it stretches out the fabric more easily.

However, even the thickest of cushion fabrics wrinkle like that over time anyway, so, like we said earlier, it’s not something you even notice. Besides, you can always machine wash the covers to keep them nice and taught.

Personally, we love the feel of these covers, but we thought we’d mention this just as a heads up for those who want to know.

Alternative Pick: Modway Convene

Dimensions:86.5″ L x 86.5″ W x 31.5″ H
Couch:86.5″ L x 44.5″ W x 31.5″ H
Ottomans (each):61″ L x 27.5″ W x 13″ H
Round Ottoman:31.5″ L x 31.5″ W x 13″ H
Height with Canopy Fully Extended:70″ H

The new and improved version of the Modway Quest, the Modway Convene features better zipper placement so they’re actually hidden now, and the overall build quality feels like it’s been improved a little.

Why the Modway Convene an alternate top pick? Because this one has color options. Instead of listing all the colors, I’ll just show you. You can any of the pictures below to view that color option on Amazon.

Also bear in mind that the white one is actually white, while the Bellagio outdoor daybed we reviewed above is off white. We personally prefer off white, but the choice is there if you want it.

However, despite the great variety in color options, the Modway Convene and its older version, the Modway Quest, have their downsides that keep them from being awarded the top pick.

First of all, the rattan is somewhat thin, and has a kind of shininess to it, as you can see in the photos above. To be honest though, you might even like the look of it more than a more “natural looking” rattan weave. Looks come down to personal preference, after all.

The cushions also slide just as much as any other daybed, so you can use that Velcro trick we mentioned in the review above.

However, the only real problem with this one is that the shock suspension isn’t that great, and the metal parts can be prone to rusting if left uncovered. However, it’s still comfortable to lay on, with cushions 4″ thick, just like other outdoor daybeds, and you’ll probably be keeping it covered during bad weather anyway.

It’s still a really nice outdoor daybed for the price, and it has plenty of room for multiple people to sit or lay down and enjoy the sunshine. The more exotic color choices can really spice up your patio into having more of a resort vibe, but, like we said earlier, we prefer the classy off-white look of the top pick the most.

What We Like:

  • Six Color Options – If you like red wine, go for the red one. Jokes aside, the range of exotic color options mean there’s something for everyone.
  • Six Throw Pillows Included – The top pick only comes with four, which isn’t really enough in our opinion, so it’s great that this one has more. That being said, nice throw pillows are easy to get elsewhere, and they don’t necessarily have to match the original ones in order for them to look good.

What We Don’t Like:

  • The Suspension – The quality of the shocks is not that great, and they, like the other metal parts on this daybed, can tend to rust after a being left uncovered for a year or so. We’d suggest keeping your outdoor daybed covered when not in use anyway, because it keeps it much cleaner at the very least.
  • The Rattan – The rattan could do with being a bit thicker, but it still seems plenty sturdy enough. We also prefer a more matte finish on the rattan like on the Bellagio reviewed above, which makes it look more natural and less plastic-like in our opinion.

Best High End Outdoor Daybed: Modway Soujourn

Dimensions:86.5″ L x 86.5″ W x 31.5″ H
Ottomans (each):62″ L x 27.5″ W x 13″ H
Round Ottoman:80″ L x 33″ W x 13″ H
Height with Canopy Fully Extended:70″ H

This one is quite an upgrade to the Modway Convene, in that it uses Sunbrella fabric.

You probably already know how great Sunbrella is, but in case you don’t, then I’ll briefly explain.Sunbrella fabric is made with acrylic fibers that are dyed all the way through, not just on the surface like every other fiber. The pigments they use are highly UV resistant, so you basically won’t find any other fabric on the market that’s more fade-resistant than Sunbrella’s.

Sunbrella’s fabric is also highly mold and mildew resistant. Mildew can grow on dirt left on Sunbrella fabric, but it won’t stay in the fabric, which means it can be cleaned off incredibly easily.

Speaking of which, Sunbrella fabric is bleach cleanable, which is a huge quality of life improvement over other fabrics, where the dye would change color if you tried cleaning them with bleach.

Finally, Sunbrella fabric is breathable, which means air can pass through it. That’s really helpful for staying cool while lounging on this outdoor daybed’s Sunbrella cushions on a hot day.

The available color options for the Soujourn are Beige Antique Canvas, Navy Canvas, and Tuscan Canvas. To choose a different color than the Beige Antique Canvas option you see in the photo above, you’ll need to contact the Amazon seller on the product’s store page.

What We Like:

  • Sunbrella Fabric – For all the reasons listed above in that orange box. There’s simply no other fabric out there that could take Sunbrella’s place as the top pick for outdoor furniture.

What We Don’t Like:

  • The Cost – It has to be said, that the Sunbrella fabric’s inclusion in this product raises the price quite a bit. That’s why this is more of a high end option than a recommendation for most people. You’re paying for quality here, and it shows.

Alternative Pick: King Rattan Contract Quality Daybed

Dimensions:72″ L x 71″ W x 79″ H (including canopy)

This one is also made with Sunbrella fabric. Here’s the information again about why Sunbrella is such a big deal. Skip this part if you’ve just read it in the last review.Sunbrella fabric is made with acrylic fibers that are dyed all the way through, not just on the surface like every other fiber. The pigments they use are highly UV resistant, so you basically won’t find any other fabric on the market that’s more fade-resistant than Sunbrella’s.

One of the great things about the design of this one is that it has omni-directional sun coverage. You can put it anywhere, and then adjust the curtains for however much shade you want.

Sure, the round canopy of the other outdoor daybeds reviewed in this guide are the most modern design currently, but we think that King Rattan’s take on the traditional bed canopy design looks ultra modern.

We’re also in love with the unique take on the rattan. The weave is quite different from what you usually see, and it just looks amazing. The neatness of it and the intricacy of the pattern really adds to the overall “premium” feel of this product.

Of course, this outdoor daybed only has two pieces, but it does have armrests, which you can lay drinks on, because the whole thing is plenty sturdy enough. The cushions are 5″ thick, compared to the standard 4″ thick cushions on practically every single other outdoor daybed, and the rust-resistant 1.5mm thick aluminium tubing used in the frame would be tough enough to able to take bashes and dings no problem.

The reason this one is the alternate high end pick and not the high end pick, is because the design might not suit everyone. We personally prefer this outdoor daybed to the Modway Soujourn, but we appreciate that the squareness of its outline may not suit every patio.

What We Like:

  • Durable Materials – Sunbrella fabric cushions and rust-resistant aluminium metal parts, complete with a sturdy overall design that’s fit for taking on bad weather and coming out as good as new when it’s nice and sunny again.
  • Cushions Made in the US – While the rattan’s resin is made in France, and the frame is made in Indonesia, the cushions are made in the US. The cushions are really the part where quality control matters the most, so this is a huge plus.

What We Don’t Like:

  • Limited Space for Drinks – A drinks tray is your best option, and not a bad one at that, since the Sunbrella fabric is so stain-resistant. However, there’s only the armrests on each side that are stable, flat surfaces to rest drinks directly on.
